Event Calendar
Trails In Motion Film Fest & 2025 UTofMB Awards Night
We’re pleased to present the Trails In Motion 13 Film Tour with 6 great films from around the world. Join us for a night that celebrates trail running here at home and around the world.
We'll be celebrating a great season of trail work and races, by crowning the winners in our 2025 Ultimate Trails of Manitoba series and giving away great prizes. MATR members have been earning points for every local trail race they complete or volunteer at. Members also earned points by participating in trail work days with us.
Once again we’ll host a gear swap as part of this event.
Bring your (clean) pre-loved (trail) running gear to swap with other runners.
Maybe you want to get rid of some gear that doesn't fit any more or that you don't really use after all.
Sell it or give it away for free. It's up to you.
Please be prepared with CASH if you're hoping to score some great gear (and please be able to make change if you're selling your stuff). We’ll have several tables set up so people can put out the gear they’re hoping to re-home. Please make sure you mark any time you’d like to sell with your name and price.
Single Track Sunday
All Women’s Run
Manitoba has an incredible community of women trail runners, and to recognize this, we’re excited to host an ALL-WOMEN’s Single Track Sunday. This run is open to all runners who identify as women.
We’re excited to co-host this run with Caroline Fisher, from Big Sky Run Co.
When: 9:00 am at the trailhead, we’ll aim to be running by 9:15 am
Where: *Birds Hill Park, Nimowin Trail Head.
This is a great opportunity to try out trail running for the first time if you’ve thought about trying trail running but found it intimidating. We’ll take you on some twisty-turny single track, and soak in time together on the trail.
We’ve curated a route on the not-so-secret single track in the northeast corner of Birds Hill Provincial Park. If you’ve never run these trails, you’re in for a treat with sweet, winding single track featuring rocks and roots to test your footing. And possibly some snow!
We’ll mark an approximately 6.5km route for runners to do as many or as few loops as they like. There are numerous social trails in this area, and it can be easy to get turned around so we’ll pre-mark out our route for the day with flagging tape at each junction.
Please dress appropriately for the weather and effort. If you need some tips on layering for colder weather runs, feel free to message us on social or email us at info@matr.ca, or swing by Big Sky Run Co for some layering tips.
Pack your own water/hydration and snacks for the trail. Depending on the weather, we may hang out for a bit post-run. Feel free to bring snacks or beverages to share afterwards. We’ll head down to The Village at Pine Ridge for some post-run chats and coffee.
Hot Tip: Have a change of clothes and shoes for the after run social time and drive home, as it’s easy to get chilled in damp running clothes after your run.
Single Track Sundays
Single Track Sunday
When: 9:30 am at the trailhead (meet us around the middle of Sellers Hill Road)
Where: Stony Mountain Quarry Trails, Stony Mountain
We’re going to run the Stony Mountain Quarry trails this month.
The Fossil Ridge loop at Stony Mountain Quarry is approximately 2.6km. We’ll run it several times and explore some of the ways to crisscross around the quarry and on some of the single track on the edges.
Pack your own water/hydration and snacks for the trail.
We try to organize a carpool before each event to reduce the number of vehicles at trailheads and reduce our group emissions. If you’re interested in carpooling, please email us at info@matr.ca with your name and area of the city. We’ll try to connect people interested in carpooling in advance.
Hot Tip: Have a change of clothes and shoes for the ride home. You can get chilled quickly in damp running clothes, particularly in cooler temperatures. A thermos of something warm to drink afterwards is also nice on cold days.
NOTE: We’re all-weather people and run under all conditions. However, this event may be rescheduled if the road conditions make travelling unsafe on the day.
Fossil Ridge Loop
The main Fossil Ridge loop skirts the perimeter of the quarry and is well marked with signposts along the way.
Optional route
There are many ways to criss-cross and combine sections of trail across the quarry, as well as adding on stretches of single track along the northern edge of the quarry and heading through town for a bit of extra single track on the southern edge.
We’ll see what the group feels like exploring after doing one clockwise loop of the Fossil Ridge trail and one counter-clockwise loop.

The Longest Night Run
Run or walk with us on the longest night of the year, December 21-22.
The Longest Night Run is a community vigil where we come together to remember those lost and to honour those struggling through difficult seasons in life.
Tuesday, December 21 is the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. In southern Manitoba that means 16 hours of darkness, from sunset to sunrise on the 22nd.
This is a night where we experience darkness. Grief. Loneliness. Anxiety. Weariness. We think of friends and family who are suffering. We think of the dark, lonely places in our own lives. We're not running for speed, nor heroics.
Maybe you're suffering. Maybe someone you know is suffering. This is your chance to practice longing. To practice hope. This is a vigil. This is us using our feet because words will not suffice.
And, together, we will move forward through the darkness.
Run package pickup and snacks will be available all night at The Public in Steinbach. Check out these routes starting from The Public you can cover.
You can also choose to walk or run, alone or with friends or family, anywhere you are – for 30 minutes, 2 hours, 8 hours, or the whole night.
Cost
Adults: $20
Kids: $5
Proceeds from registration as well as 100% of extra donations (which are tax-deductible) will be going to Southeast Cancer Support Services this year.
Registration includes
Participation in a memorable night of running, walking, and community
Sticker (and maybe some other goodies)

When: 10:00 am at the trailhead, run by 10:15 am
Where: Wolf Ridge, Grand Beach Provincial Park (Cross country ski trails parking lot)
Join us for another Single Track Sunday of good friends, good company, and great trails. This is a family-friendly run, and we invite you to bring your little trail runners for some trail time with us.
Grand Beach Provincial Park offers the best conditions for shoulder season running in Manitoba. The trails are in great shape for our run next weekend! The well-drained soil and rocky trails mean we can run on it without causing damage to the trail.
We’ll plan a route for little legs that gives them a taste of Wolf Ridge and Ancient Beaches trail. For adults, we’ll follow the official Wolf Ridge loop (download the GPX or see the Strava route), which is approximately 7 km.
We’ll use the parking lot as our staging area (snack stops, etc). We’ll hang out at the trailhead after our run (there are a couple of picnic tables) and use the winter-warming huts if it’s cooler. We’ll plan to make a fire in the warming hut if it’s cold.
Bring some snacks to share!
We try to organize a carpool before each event to reduce the number of vehicles at trailheads and reduce our group emissions. If you’re interested in carpooling, please email us at info@matr.ca with your name and area of the city. We’ll try to connect people interested in carpooling in advance.

Race The North Face (Tentative Date)
Race Directed by: Trails of ‘Toba
Distances: 10km, 25km, 50km and 750m Kids Run!
The Brandon Hills are a well kept secret, with over 90% gnarly single-track and unrelenting hills, to long climbs up "The Spine" a 2.5km long ridge-line which rises above the forest giving absolutely stunning 360 degree views of the prairies below. This is all made possible by a massive glacier deposit which formed this area many years ago. Please note that The Spine is on private property and requires permission prior to accessing.
All three distances are challenging in their own rights with the 10km being a great introduction to true trail running (you know, rocky, rooty, climbing and descending all those fun things!). The 25km shows competitors all the Brandon Hills have to offer, including running The Spine, with it being a full loop of the area. The 50km Ultra is 2 loops so you know what kind of hurt is in when you take on round 2... the views are worth it, right?

Single Track Sunday - Indigenous History Run 2
Exploring Indigenous Histories
A Run Series with Dr. Brian Rice
Join us for the next run in our multi-part run series, "Exploring Indigenous Histories," featuring special guest Dr. Brian Rice, a professor at the University of Manitoba.
This series offers the opportunity to connect with the land and learn about the rich and complex Indigenous histories of Treaty 1 territory, specifically within the Winnipeg area.
Dr. Rice will share his expertise, enriching our understanding of the places we run. His work has focused on providing a foundation for understanding the historical narratives that have shaped Indigenous communities.
Each run will be held at a historically significant location commonly used as a training and playground for runners in the area. These group runs will provide the opportunities for runners to engage in a different way with the landscapes that hold centuries of Indigenous stories. This run will feature more roads than trails.
Each run will first feature a guided run at an easy pace, where attendees can expect to stop frequently to learn some of the stories of the land. Following one loop under Dr. Rice’s guidance, we invite runners to run as many additional loops as they’d like at their own pace.
This run will take us through central Winnipeg's Indigenous and Métis histories. This run explores the layered histories of western Winnipeg, which is layered with Indigenous and Métis history, and early Red River Settlement development.
Through this series, we aim to work toward the Calls for Action from the Commission for Truth and Reconciliation learning more about enduring presence and contributions of Indigenous peoples in Manitoba, recognizing the layers of history embedded in these familiar landscapes.
Come run, learn, and reflect with us as we journey together on lands with historical and contemporary importance. By highlighting the historical significance of the locations to Indigenous peoples, it helps to ensure that these histories are not forgotten.
This run will take us through Whittier Park from The Forks.
Situated along the banks of the Red River, Whittier Park is part of a landscape that was central to the Red River Settlement, a vibrant Métis community that developed in the early 19th century. This area was a hub of economic and social activity, reflecting the dynamic intercultural relations that characterized the region. It also lies within the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg and Ininiwak peoples, who used the river systems for sustenance and travel for centuries.
We’ll start under the canopy between The Forks Market building and Johnson’s terminal run along to the 6000 year old site where the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is. From there we’ll cross the Provencher walkway and see the mural of the pictographss at Norway House First Nation before heading into Whittier Patk through the giant Cottonwood trees to the Seine River and the site of the heart of the Metis Nation. We’ll head the Seine River to Lagimodière-Gaboury Park, the home of Louis Riel's grandparents then along Des Meurons the Swiss mercenarys that came to police the Metis after the battle of Seven Oaks. From there we’ll run back to St. Boniface University to the statue of Louis Riel. Then to the Louis Riel and Chief One Arrows burial site.s Dr Rice will talk about when soldiers dressed as Nazi's walked down Provencher Boulevard as well as the burning of the Cathedral and USB where ten students died. From there we’ll head back to the Forks for a total of about 6-8 km.
Through this series, we aim to continue our work toward reconciliation by providing community-based, experiential learning. Actively engaging with the Indigenous history of the trails we run, teaches us about the enduring presence and contributions of Indigenous peoples in Manitoba and helps us recognize the layers of history embedded in these familiar landscapes.
Come run, learn, and reflect with us as we journey together on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Ininiwak, Anisininewuk, Dakota Oyate and Red River Métis. By highlighting the historical significance of the locations to Indigenous peoples, it helps to ensure that these histories are not forgotten.
Run details:
Time: Meet at 9:00 am, welcome and start at 9:15 am. Expect the first loop to take 1-1.5 hours.

Single Track Sunday - Indigenous History Run 1
Exploring Indigenous Histories
A Run Series with Dr. Brian Rice
Join us for a run in our multi-part run series, "Exploring Indigenous Histories," featuring special guest Dr. Brian Rice, a professor at the University of Manitoba.
This series offers the opportunity to connect with the land and learn about the rich and complex Indigenous histories of Treaty 1 territory, specifically within the Winnipeg area.

This run will take us through the town of St. Norbert. We’ll begin at John Baptiste Charret Park one of the older Metis leaders of the Red River around 1812. Run south into the Lemay Forest and follow the trails along the Red River. Then we’ll turn on to St. Pierre Street pass old Catholic church to Pollock Island Park and take trail to where the LaSalle and Red Rivers meet. This was a main bison hunter’s drop off point to Portage La Prairie or Metis settlements in North Dakota like Pembina towards St Paul Minnesota. It’s also the site of oldest artifact in Manitoba: an 8,000 year old spear point. We’ll head back along the LaSalle River to monastery, museum and St. Norbert Market. We anticpate this route to be approximately 7 km.
St Norbert is located at the confluence of the Red and La Salle Rivers, and was a vital meeting place and transportation route for Indigenous peoples for millennia. Its strategic location made it a significant site for trade, travel, and seasonal encampments, long before European settlement. For the Métis, St. Norbert holds particular importance as a historic settlement and a key location during the Red River Resistance.

By highlighting the historical significance of the locations to Indigenous peoples, it helps to ensure that these histories are not forgotten.
Run details:
Time: Meet at 9:00 am at Charret Park, 3310 Pembina Hwy, welcome and start at 9:15 am. Expect the first loop to take 1-1.5 hours.
Where: St. Norbert. We’ll explore St. Norbert with Dr. Rice before heading over to the single track for a bonus loop of some single track.

Race The North Face
